Latitude

Both Latitude and Azimuth are in the collection of South African owners who now live and work here in England. But more than 25 years ago it was their part of the world I ventured into, on my own, as a landscape architect and environmental planner. On my first morning in the Transvaal, I woke up under a thatched roof with a Hadida Ibis shrieking overhead, and knew that this moment would always be the before-and-after point of my life.

Azimuth

The first of an occasional series of small drawings on the theme of finding one's way. Each background is cut from the same large abstract drawing I created in the USA as a student influenced by the Austrian artist/ environmentalist Hundertwasser. As I moved from one continent to another over the next few decades, the drawing would turn up, increasingly dog-eared and folded smaller and smaller; like a map I had drawn years before but did not know how to interpret, until, here in England, I discovered Howard Hodgkin.
